Age: roughly 21

Crime: Treason

Background: here

Personality: Usually, Palamedes is the smartest person in the room. He's confident about this but not cocky, and his ego's kept firmly in check by how the cornerstone of his character is empathy and not being smart. He's driven first and foremost by love for his friends and family (which is the entirety of his House, literally or not), and second by his love for discovery and intellectual pursuits. He enjoys being the smartest person in the room, don't get him wrong! But he enjoys his friends and family that much more; other people's well-being is the center of his motivations. To wit: Palamedes is the Master Warden of the Sixth House, or: the leader of the Sixth of the Nine Houses, a position that he rightly earned at the young age of thirteen (smartest person in the room) for the sole purpose of giving himself a better position from which to help his people. He's dedicated real medical field development to the comfort of his friend and childhood crush, who has been ill since they met; he heeds the call of the Emperor to study Lyctorhood for her, not for love of Empire.

That one is key: Palamedes does not have love of Empire, particularly not after discovering the secret of Lyctorhood (in short: you have to eat your best friend and use their soul as a magical furnace forever). He's more attached to the individual than the greater whole, and belonging to the Empire cannot make him obey its wants. He's accused of treason here because he rejected Lyctorhood/Emperor/tried to explode one of the Emperor's Lyctors, and he would do all of these things again in a heartbeat; Palamedes' moral center is steel— nonstandard due to being a necromancer, but there are lines he won't cross and he's adamant about them.

In his relationships, Palamedes' empathy shines the most strongly. He's open with his affection, or at least, is a normal level of affectionate and happens to be surrounded by repressed teenagers— but he still hugs Harrow hard enough to lift her off the floor when they reunite. Palamedes loves deeply and openly, without shame; the mantra of the Sixth is that of "truth over solace," and Palamedes sprinkles this liberally throughout his life and relationships. He isn't at all shy about telling people his opinions, whether they're critical or saccharine-affectionate, but he doesn't demand the same in return. Like, it'd be nice, but he's handling the awkwardness of all his friends just fine. He's the type of person for whom competitive spirit doesn't preclude being besties eternal: he decides Harrow is close as a lifelong colleague days after meeting her, even as Harrow is still convinced they are in a heated rivalry.

It's worth noting that Palamedes has been on record as something of a surprise, because of his lax approach to work/his position as House leader; a castmate's notes about meeting him for the first time cite that she wouldn't have believed he was the Master Warden if she didn't already know, thanks to his attitude. He's not irresponsible, quite the opposite - but he handles work/stress ridiculously well, to the point that he sometimes comes off as an oddball rather than a serious leader. This ability to compartmentalize extends into the... concerning, too: at his canon point he's spent 8 months in isolation, which should make him insane, but he's... not! Palamedes is outwardly concerned about the implications this has for his mental fortitude; it could be Bad, Actually, to put oneself into boxes to avoid stress so well. He'll deal with it later.

Outside of high stress situations, Palamedes is an oddball; he uses himself for science experiments, he delights in bone dust and being stuck in a puzzle, he bends his glasses to breaking habitually - etc. His connection to death/spirits also gives him quirks like talking to corpses like they're still alive, politely and tenderly. Sometimes he makes silly little jokes, sometimes he's spiteful and mean— this, when his cavalier's capabilities are doubted.

Camilla-the-cavalier is the most important person in his life, sitting above his old crush and his good friend Harrow (and Gideon, and family, and so on). They've grown up together and been attached at the hip the whole time, mirror each other in many ways, and he would absolutely die and kill for her; while he can keep a cool head in the moment when Cam is fighting, for example, he's self-admittedly terrified for her safety despite full confidence in her skills. She's the best and he adores her; their relationship shows all of his normal traits - loyalty, affection, unconditional support - dialed up to eleven and with the knob broken off.

He's six parts empathy, one part brains.

Abilities: Palamedes is a necromancer, which is most succinctly explained here. Palamedes' specialization is in psychometry, or the ability to learn the history of an object/person through touch. He has demonstrably used this ability to tell the age of objects and read the presence of other people in a place after they've left; he can recognize the "signature" of an individual if he's familiar enough with it, i.e. if he's handled their belongings or touched them physically he can recognize their presence elsewhere later. Per asking here on the FAQ this will be glitched out for him when it comes to the setting, which he will super love (this is genuine).

He is arguably the best necromancer of his generation who is specifically not a Lyctor, which is a feat unto itself. He also:
- manipulates bodies from the inside out, such as when he used necromancy to reach into Cytherea and dial her cancer up to eleven, as it were
- preserves his own soul/mind in a bubble in the River, or the place the souls of the dead go; this is remarked on as insanely difficult to the point of seeming impossible, particularly because he hangs around there for 8 months without his soul deteriorating
- has an eidetic memory, cited as always remembering everything he reads without trouble
- while he has the knowledge of many of the Eightfold Word/Lyctoral theorems, separately, he finds the concept of Lyctorhood and how it's achieved so abhorrent that he won't touch the pieces, particularly soul siphoning and the various other ways necromancers can use/"ride" a cavalier; just worth noting that he could, if his entire moral compass was flipped upside down
Inventory: A stubby pencil, scraps of wallpaper, a very bad romance novel, one (1) insulated copper wire coil (a few feet long), a decorative throw pillow.
